Amir Abbas Asgari

I am a PhD Student at the Cheriton School of Computer Science, University of Waterloo, advised by Éric Schost. Previously, I obtained my master’s degree at the University of Calgary under an interdisciplinary program affiliated with the Departments of Computer Science and Mathematics, advised by Michael Jacobson and Renate Scheidler. Before that, I finished my bachelor’s in Iran at the Department of Computer Engineering, Sharif University of Technology.

Research

I am going to pursue research in the broad areas of Computer Algebra and Symbolic Computation during my PhD. My master’s research mainly falls under Computational and Algorithmic Number Theory, and it involved developing software to realize faster Jacobian arithmetic on hyperelliptic curves (the thesis is available here).

During my undergraduates, I also had some research and industry experience in Data Science when I worked on addressing the biased data problem for recommendation systems under a bachelor’s thesis (in Persian), along with a summer internship at Tapsell.

And I was fortunate to be first exposed to serious mathematical research as a student at Allameh Helli High School of Tehran taking a math research course with Majid Jahangiri, which led to my first publication, before starting my bachelor’s.
